Up for your consideration is Wight. Saturday 18 February 1995. Northwesterly backing southwesterly 6 or 7, increasing gale 8 for a time. Showers then rain. Good becoming moderate or poor, a museum quality archival print by legendary photographer Mark Power (B. 1959) titled (printed in 2017), from his renowned body of work published as The Shipping Forecast. This is a Magnum Photos 6 x 6 inch Square Print that is signed by the photographer on the verso. Mr. Power says this about this wonderful image on the label above his signature on the back-
“The Shipping Forecast’ project began with the purchase of a tea towel from a British lifeboat gift shop in 1990. It was illustrated with a map marking the location of each sea area featured in the BBC radio programme broadcast four-times-daily to warn those at sea, or about to put to sea, of inclement weather,
The Shipping Forecast had been part of my life as far back as I could remember, but my love of its mantra-like, esoteric language negated any thought that these magical-sounding places might exist in real geographical locations. Armed with this new knowledge, I set out to visit all 31 areas – in retrospect a ridiculously ambitious idea that would take me four years to complete – to see if the reality of what I found bore any resemblance to the imaginary landscapes that already existed inside my head. The caption is the 6 a.m. forecast for sea area ‘Wight,’ broadcast on the day the picture was made. When the book was published, in 1996, this image was used on the cover.”
The edition size of these is set by the amount sold in one week. They are now sold out and no more will be issued. It comes in an archival sleeve, which you can see in the pictures. It has never been matted or framed. In addition to the print, the Magnum cardboard sleeve is included. It has been kept in a smoke and pet free environment.
