On September 26th, 1993 the Formula 1 GP of Portugal took place at the Autódromo Fernanda Pires da Silvaist near Estoril. Schumacher was not able to assert himself against the strong competition from the Williams, McLaren and Ferrari teams in qualifying and only managed sixth place on the grid.
Even before the start of the race, there was drama with qualifying winner Damon Hill from Team Williams, whose car did not want to start and as a result had to start the race at the end of the starting field. This paved the way for the competition to battle it out.
At the start of the race, Mika Häkkinen from Team McLaren was able to take the lead against Alain Prost from Team Williams. Jean Alesi from Ferrari and Ayrton Senna from McLaren also got off to a very good start and was able to place second and third ahead of Prost. Michael Schumacher completed the leading group in fifth place behind Prost.
As the race progressed, Hill worked his way up the field and caught up with the leading group. The race reached a decisive turning point on lap 20 when Senna had to park his car due to engine failure. At the same time, Häkkinen, Alesi and Schumacher pitted for their first stop, with Schumacher's better strategy allowing him to lead the group of three. As a result, Mclaren drivers Prost and Hill, who were pursuing a one-stop strategy, briefly took the lead. But when the leading duo had to stop on lap 29, Schumacher suddenly saw himself as the leader again.
When Häkkinen also maneuvered his car against the inner wall of the track at the start and finish a short time later due to a driving error, only Prost and Hill were able to defend Schumacher's victory. Prost waited for Schumacher to stop again, but gradually realized that the German was also driving on a one-stop strategy. He and Hill caught up directly to Schumacher. As the group closed in on the riders to be lapped, Schumacher used the traffic to his advantage and managed to stay ahead all the way to the finish. Prost wanted to win, but he also knew that second place was good enough to secure the world championship.
With this success, Michael Schumacher secured his second Formula 1 victory after winning the Belgian GP in 1992. It was his first victory for the Benetton Ford team and started his legendary winning streak, which in subsequent years led to his first two world championship titles in 1994 and 1995.
