Description

Here we have a fantastic matted and framed, hand-signed and numbered print by the internationally-acclaimed, Austrian-Amercan and Jewish artist, Chaim Gross (March 17, 1904 – May 5, 1991). According to the late Mr. Gross' Wikipedia entry, Gross was born to a Jewish family in Austrian Galicia, in the village of Wolowa (now known as Mezhgorye, Ukraine), in the Carpathian Mountains. In 1911, his family moved to Kolomyia (which was annexed into the Ukrainian SSR in 1939 and became part of newly independent Ukraine in 1991). During World War I, Russian forces invaded Austria-Hungary; amidst the turmoil, the Grosses fled Kolomyia. They returned when Austria retook the town in 1915, refugees of the war. When World War I ended, Gross and brother Avrom-Leib went to Budapest to join their older siblings Sarah and Pinkas. Gross applied to and was accepted by the art academy in Budapest and studied under the painter Béla Uitz, though within a year a new regime under Miklos Horthy took over and attempted to expel all Jews and foreigners from the country. After being deported from Hungary, Gross began art studies at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna, Austria shortly before immigrating to the United States in 1921. This beautiful print depicts a bearded man with a sorrowful countenance, emotively playing a violin, or fiddle, in concert with two accompanyists - who are playing what appear to be a clarinet, and a flute, respectively - set behind him. It is hand-numbered, "7/15;" signed in the artist's hand; and dated, "'65," for 1965. There is also another set of markings following these that appear to suggest, "Fr" ...perhaps for France, if that's where this work was executed, or where this scene had first been observed by the artist... but we have not confirmed any of this, for ourselves. These stylized marks are also suggestive of Hebrew, or Cyrillic lettering. Any additional information is welcome; please drop us a message! Print is in excellent condition, with no acquired imperfections in the image or print surface. Towards the top of the surrounding matte surface, there are 3 small areas that appear slightly lighter than the surrounding matte. These discolorations do not carry over onto the printed surface. Please see images.
