A mid 17th century edition of the memoirs of de Bourdeille
Montresor. Montresor was the favourite of Gaston d'Orleans, Louis XIII's
brother, from whom he kept all those suspected of attachment to Cardinal
Richelieu away. He made several meetings between his master and the Count of
Soissons easier, and was the real leader of the plot to overthrow Richelieu.
The plot was discovered and Montresor went into exile in his lands to rule out
any suspicion. However, he saw Gaston d'Orleans again and took part, in 1642,
in the new conspiracy formed by the Duke of Bouillon, Orleans and Cinq-Mars.
Once again discovered he was betrayed by Gaston d'Orleans, who claimed that his
favourite was constantly dragging him into new intrigues.
