On 6th July 1948, His Majesty King George VI accompanied by Their Royal Highnesses Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret visited RAF College Cranwell. The visit by their Majesties was undoubtedly a highlight of the year.
The purpose of the visit was for HM King George to present the 1st King‘s Colour ever to be borne by the RAF to RAF College Cranwell. This photograph is shown with the kind permission of the Trustees of the Royal Air Force Museum.
In 1947, HM King George VI signified approval to the award of Colours to the RAF in the UK, the RAF College Cranwell and Number 1 School of Technical Training. Colours are awarded by the Sovereign in recognition of Service achievement and they are presented by the Sovereign or a person nominated to act on the Sovereign’s behalf.
