Here are 2 beautiful, airbrushed, watercolor paintings by Sue Guild, an artist who created paintings for Newman Decor.
Newman Decor was a high end interior design firm operating out of NYC from the 1930s-50s. They commissioned original paintings like this, usually in pairs, from a handful of artists to match the colors and themes of their interiors.
The paintings and frames are original. Southwestern themed, art deco style. Paintings are recessed in weaved wooden (rattan) frames which are painted a in shiny (enamel?) cream color.
The first painting is of a dark haired lady wearing a long white dress with a pink sash. She is standing in a garden of newly growing white flowers. She's holding a rake and something that might be garden bordering material. Beside her is a cactus on one side and a pile of clay pottery on the other. Behind her is a red roofed, tan colored house with open shutters on the windows and an open front door. There appears to be a separate, small, similar building off to the side of the house. House is bordered by a palm and 2 other trees and grass. The copyright "ND" for Newman Decor is stamped in the right corner and the artist's signature Guild in the left corner. On the back, there are tears on the dust cover and a torn label. Written in red are 47N 1990 (painting's number, not the year). On the top is a small sticker that reads 037. There appears to be some wrinkling near the top of the painting.
The second picture features the same lady. She's standing in the front yard in a garden with newly growing white flowers. Beside her are several terracotta pots and she is delivering more to her gardening area as she balances one on her head with one hand and drops one on the ground with the other. She stands beside a white yard cart with large, wagon type wheels. There's a red roofed, tan colored house with open shutters on the windows and a chimney on top. Small brown, fenced in building off of the side of the house. There are palm and other trees and foliage in the background. The copyright "ND" for Newman Decor is stamped in the left corner and the artist's signature Guild in the right corner.
Framed size is 14 3/4 in. tall X 12 7/8 in. wide. Painting size appears to be approximately 12 in. tall X 10 in. wide as seen from the back of the picture.
Paintings are in very good condition. There are a few spots under the glass which may be dust. Frames are original and have some paint loss. Makes them look shabby styled! Some of the paper's border can be seen in the space between glass and frame. This could easily be covered with a mat. Dust cover and label have been removed from the back of one painting and on the other, the dust cover is there and has tears and a torn label. The painting with the yard cart appears to have some wrinkling near the top of the painting.
