One packet of 40 or more seeds

Draba aizoides, a small evergreen alpine perennial, produces bright yellow flowers above clustered cushions in very early spring. Hairs growing from leaf edges give the foliage a spiky appearance. Flowers are an early source of food for bees. It is suitable for a rock garden or an alpine trough or pan (a small container-planted alpine garden). Somewhat shrub-like, older plants develop thick, woody stems.

Seeds are collected from plants grown in Edmonton, Canada: hardiness zone 3 (to -35C).

We grew our plants from seeds identified only as Draba sp. Our plants resemble Draba aizoides, but we cannot be certain they are this species. They may be a very similar species. Whatever it is, it's a good, hardy, easy plant, and attractive all year round.

Seeds germinate quickly (within 2-3 weeks) at room temperature or in spring warmth. Sow in a pot or seed tray over moist potting mix. Cover very lightly with coarse sand or fine grit and press in. Keep moist. Small seedlings may be overwintered outdoors under good snow cover or kept indoors in a cool room under lights. When seedlings become crowded, move them into a larger tray or into separate pots. Plant them into the garden in late summer or when the initial "bun" is full size (1-2 cm across). Expect flowers in the second spring, and every spring from then on.
