One packet of 20 or more seeds.

These large-flowered acaulis type primroses (single flowers on short stems, hybrids of Primula vulgaris) bloom in early spring and again in autumn. They are easy to grow in light shade at the front of a gently sloping perennial border or in pots. They like rich loamy soil that stays moist but not too wet.

This packet contains seeds from a white flower (third photo) pollinated with a blue flower (fourth photo) and also with several purple and pink flowers, and from purple/pink flowers pollinated with each other. Seeds should produce mainly purples and pinks, and perhaps a white or a blue.

Seeds are collected from the plants pictured, grown in Edmonton, Canada: hardiness zone 3 (to -35C). These plants have proved hardy so far through three of our long, cold winters.

Sow seeds in pots or trays in winter or early spring. Surface sow on seed-starting or multi-purpose potting mix. Cover lightly with coarse sand or grit and press in. Do not bury the seeds -- they need light to germinate. Keep indoors to germinate at room temperature, or set outdoors (under snow cover, if available) and leave to germinate in spring warmth. Move crowded seedlings into a larger tray or separate pots; keep them evenly watered in a sheltered location away from direct midday sun. Plant seedlings into the garden in late summer when the weather turns cool. Expect flowers from the second spring onward.
