The Cutimed Sorbact Anti-Microbial Wound Dressing is the first of its kind which chemically binds microbes to itself irreversibly removing bacteria and fungi from the wounded area. To do so, Cutimed Sorbact uses a technology known as DACC (or Dialkylcarbamoylchlorid), a fatty acid which coats all wound dressings.
How does Cutimed Sorbact Anti-Microbial Wound Dressing employ DACC technology?
As a fatty acid, the DACC coating on the Cutimed Sorbact is neutraly charged and therefore water repelant, or hydrophobic. Most bacteria or fungi found within a wound express the same hydrophobic properties around their cell surface.
Cutimed Sorbact uses the 'cell surface hydrophobicity' (CSH) in conjunction with its own strong hydrophobic properties to draw microbes away from the wound and onto itself. Hence, in a moist environment, bacteria and fungi will necessarily associate with the Cutimed Sorbact Wound Dressing, becoming irreversibly bound to it. This way, Cutimed Sorbact is able to absorb entire colonies, neutalizing or reversing infections in the process.
Cutimed Sorbact Anti-Microbial Wound Dressing, benefits and results:
- By reducing the bacterial bioburden this anti-microbial wound dressing accelerates the healing process. By removing bacteria with each dressing change, Cutimed Sorbact reduces not only their number but also the level of harmful toxins, improving the conditions for wound healing to take place.
- The more pathogenic (agressive) the bacteria the more effectively Cutimed Sorbact will remove them. This is because of another proven principle: the more virulent the bacteria, the more hydrophobic its properties will be, and consequently the stronger the attraction to the specially coated surfice of the wound dressing, away from the wound itself.
- The simple and natural way the Cutimed Sorbact works, means that none of the drawbacks of conventional antimicrobial dressings apply. For instance, there is no risk of bacteria developing resistence in the way they might with other antimicrobial dressings and antibiotic based solutions. Moreover, Cutimed Sorbact contains no cytotoxicity, does not disturb in-wound inspection and has no contra-indications. This means that Cutimed Sorbact Anti-Microbial Wound Dressing can be safely used during pregnancy, breastfeeding and on children.
Cutimed Sorbact Anti-Microbial Wound Dressing indications:
Cutimed Sorbact is very effective on all wounds where the primary goal is to reduce the bacterial burden, regardless of their aetiology. This includes:
- All unclean, colonised and infected exuding wounds.
- Wounds after excision of fistulae and abscesses.
- Postoperative, dehisced wounds.
- Traumatic wounds.
- Prophylactical uses.
Depending on the volume of exudate, Cutimed Sorbact can easily be combined with amorphous hydrogels, such as Sorbact Gel, or various types of secondary dressings such as:
- Transparent film dressings: Leukomed T Film Dressing or Leukomed T Plus.
- Absorbent dressings: Cutimed Siltec Foam or Cutisorb Ultra.
