The franchise began as the Grand Rapids Rippers, a minor league team based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, playing in the Western League. In 1900, the team relocated to Cleveland and was known as the Cleveland Lake Shores. The Western League was renamed the American League before the 1900 season, retaining its minor league status. When the American League declared itself a major league in 1901, Cleveland was one of its eight charter franchises. Originally called the Cleveland Bluebirds or Blues, the team was also informally known as the Cleveland Bronchos in 1902. From 1903, the team was named the Cleveland Napoleons or Naps, in honor of team captain Nap Lajoie. After Lajoie's departure following the 1914 season, team owner Charles Somers asked baseball writers to choose a new name. They selected the Cleveland Indians, a nod to the nickname given to the Cleveland Spiders during the time of Louis Sockalexis, a Native American player. This name persisted for over a century, with popular nicknames including the "Tribe" and the "Wahoos," referencing the team's former logo, Chief Wahoo. Amid criticism of the Native American mascot controversy, the team ceased using "Indians" after the 2021 season and was renamed the Cleveland Guardians starting in 2022. The Cleveland Guardians are a Major League Baseball (MLB) team based in Cleveland, Ohio, competing in the American League (AL) Central division. They have played their home games at Progressive Field since 1994. Since their Major League establishment in 1901, the Guardians have won 11 Central Division titles, six American League pennants, and two World Series championships (in 1920 and 1948). Their World Series championship drought since 1948 is the longest active streak among all 30 Major League teams. The teams name pays homage to the Guardians of Traffic, eight monumental 1932 Art Deco sculptures by Henry Hering on the Hope Memorial Bridge adjacent to Progressive Field. The team's mascot is named Slider, and their spring training facility is located at Goodyear Ballpark in Goodyear, Arizona. Item ordered may not be exact piece shown. All original and authentic.
