Gum Dammar (or dammar) is a natural resin   It is usually available as tears or smallish lumps and has a very light pale yellow to white colour.   It derives from trees found in Malaysia, Indonesia  and the Far East.   

Properties:

Dammar is a natural resin that is of medium hardness.  If of good quality, its clarity and optical properties make it suitable as a component of varnishes and lacquers that require clarity and purity. As such, Damar is use for picture varnishes where quality is important.

 Gum dammar is soluble in turpentine and (in some cases only partially) in some alcohols.  A good quality removable picture varnish can be made cheaply and simply by dissolving dammar in pure refined turpentine.

 Dammar is regarded by some as having mystic properties and has a pleasant fragrance when burnt or heated. 

 The melting point of dammar can be variable depending upon the precise source of the resin.   A melting point range of between      is common.   Its melting point range can make it suitable for mixing with other waxes and resins. 

 Uses: 

Damar has a number of uses which may include being: 

·        a constituent of clear varnishes and polishes. 

·        a component of quality picture varnishes.  The optical properties and its ageing qualities make dammar particularly suitable for fine picture varnishes.

·        an incense
