About the Intel 8085:
Introduced in 1977, the 8085 was binary compatible with Intel's 8080. Simpler and yet more advanced, Intel originally envisioned the 8085 as the heir to the 8080 microprocessor, however the more capable Zilog Z80 proved to be formidable competition. Though not successful as a microprocessor, the 8085 did find a niche as a microcontroller. The real legacy of the 8085, however, is in the large family of chips Intel created to support and expand its capabilities. These support chips created a  sharp competitive edge for Intel's evolving microprocessors.
