GEORGE J. SPERL

Indiana watercolor artist and WWII veteran, George Joseph Sperl, passed away in his home on Sunday, March 30, 2014 after a long illness at 95 years of age. George, was born in Portsmouth, VA. He spent many happy childhood years on his grandmother's farm in Peshtigo, WI before settling with his family in Northwest Indiana where he met his wife. George was a member of St. Thomas More Church in Munster. He enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow war veterans and was a member of American Legion Post 16 in Hammond. George was also a member of Knights of Columbus, Whiting Council 1696, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degrees, and Abraham Lincoln Assembly #235 4th degree. A self-taught watercolor artist, George was happiest in his art studio, painting Indiana Dunes and farm scenes reminiscent of days gone by, airplanes, and steam trains that continue to be admired nationally and far beyond.
