• • Born in Boston in 1923, Marie Cosindas was a Greek-American photographer. Marie Cosindas studied painting at the Boston Museum School. Her Boston studio was in the same building as the Carl Siembab Gallery. She attended photography workshops with Ansel Adams in 1961 and Minor White in 1963 — 1964.
• • In 1962 Marie Cosindas was one of about a dozen photographers who were invited by Polaroid to test Polacolor film. Since then Cosindas worked exclusively in color, manipulating various components of the process to produce the warm tones she preferred. Cosindas created sensuous portraits of figures and objects using a view camera, natural light, and color filters, working in the same way whether the images were personal or commissioned.
• • Her color palette is muted, harmonious, atmospheric, and she infuses her images with romance and nostalgia.
• • Marie Cosindas died May 25, 2017 in Brigham and Women’s Hospital of complications from pneumonia. Ms. Cosindas was 93.
• • Note: "Sailors in Key West, Florida" was created in SOFT FOCUS as a Polaroid in 1966.
