This listing is for the Antique 19th C. Folk Art Painting of the NYC Skyline at Moonlight with the Brooklyn Bridge & East River pictured above.

About this work:

A highly unusual, large, early folk art painting depicting a view of the New York City skyline, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the East River from a pier.

In the bottom of the composition, a group of figures can be seen relaxing and socializing on a simple wooden pier. Some cargo and part of a large docked ship can be seen in the bottom right. In the river a series of ships and boats can be seen, including a small paddle steamer with smoke rising out of its chimney. Along the righthand side, a newly built Brooklyn Bridge stretches across the East River. Its iconic neo-Gothic stone towers with twin pointed arches are just visible in the distance. A dark, nearly endless, NYC skyline separates the river from a vibrant moonlit sky.

Given the lack of the Manhattan bridge, which was built between 1901 and 1909, and the attire of the figures on the pier, this work likely dates to the 1890s.

The work is an oil on canvas. The work is possibly signed with the artist’s initials in the bottom left corner, but they are indiscernible. The work is housed in a distressed style wood frame.
