One packet of 100 or more seeds

We grow our Fritillaria meleagris (Snake's Head Fritillary, Checkered Lily, Guinea Hen Flower) in a moist, cool, lightly shaded bed (on the north side of a board fence). The soil is mainly organic matter -- peat, garden compost, leaf mould, and rotted manure -- with a little sand mixed in for better drainage. The soil stays moist and somewhat spongy and springy, and it drains quickly after snow-melt or heavy rain.

Our seeds are collected in 2022 and 2021 from the plants shown,
growing in our garden in Edmonton, Canada -- zone 3 (to -35C). Colours are white with green and burgundy-brown.

We have tested the seeds. After 6 weeks moist-packed in the refrigerator, almost all seeds have produced a visible embryo. See the fourth (early July) and fifth (late August) photos. The embryo is the line extending from the bottom point up into the seed. Seeds require a wet-cold period (stratification). Scatter them on the ground in summer or autumn; or refrigerate them in a container with moistened paper for 6-12 weeks and then sow in pots, indoors or outdoors in early spring. After the foliage dies in summer, move the tiny bulbs into the garden. Many bulbs will be large enough to produce a flower after two years, and then they will begin to multiply.
