1959 Avrocar UPI Telephoto

Original, not a reproduction.

Avrocar was developed as part of a secret U.S. Military project.

Security surrounding the Avrocar was broken, when this photo was taken from a plane, when the Avrocar was parked outside a hanger.

This UPI Telephoto is from a family member who worked at television station, WLWI, in Indianapolis, Indiana, during the 1950s and 1960s.

Paper in very good condition. Stored between pages of a book for decades. The paper has folds.

No holes in the paper. Some yellowing. Paper is thin and supple.

Overall, this UPI Telephoto, about 64 years old, is in very good condition.

10/29 - TORONTO, CANADA: Shown in photo taken from the air is A.V. Roe's flying saucer, officially called the Avrocar, which is being produced for the U.S. Army and Air Force. The saucer made a successful flight inside a hangar and soon will be tested outside. Sir Roy Dobson, chairman of the company's board reported 10/28. Security surrounding the craft was broken when a freelance photographer took pictures of it from a plane when it was parked outside a hanger. Turret in center is believed to be pilot's cockpit. Avrocar Brief History

The Avrocar was a aircraft developed by Avro Canada as part of a secret U.S. military project during the Cold War.

In the air, it would have resembled a flying saucer.

Avro referred to the program as Project Y with vehicles known as Spade and Omega.

Project Y-2 was later funded by the U.S. Air Force, referring to it as Project 1794 and Project Silver Bug.

When the U.S. Army joined in, it took on its final name, Avrocar and VZ-9.

Introduced in 1958.

Produced 1958 – 1959.

Number built – 2.

First flight November 12, 1959.

Retired in 1961.

UPI is an international news agency that provided news to thousands of newspapers, magazines, radio and TV stations for most of the 20^th century.

I found a newspaper clipping online regarding the Avrocar in The Sandusky Register newspaper in Sandusky, Ohio, dated October 30, 1959, using this UPI photo in their news article. So, October 29th referred to in the text of my UPI Telephoto, is evidentially referring to the year 1959. Almost 64 years ago. The Sandusky clipping indicates “America is about to test-fly its first flying saucer.” …”hoping to beat the Russians to the punch…”
