One packet of 35 or more seeds

Lewisia rediviva is a small perennial plant suitable for a rock garden or an alpine trough or pan (a small container-planted alpine garden) in a soil that is gritty, and quick-draining. Tufts of thin succulent leaves are followed by large pink and white flowers in early summer. Plants become dormant and disappear after flowering. The following year's leaves appear at the soil surface in autumn.

Seeds are collected in 2023 & 2022 from plants grown in Edmonton, Canada: hardiness zone 3 (to -35C).

Seeds require wet-cold stratification to break dormancy and allow germination. This can be achieved by various means. The easiest and most effective method is to leave the sowing outdoors, under snow over, for all or part of the winter and let germination occur in gradual spring warmth.

Sow seeds indoors in late autumn, winter, or very early spring. Sow in a pot or seed tray over moist potting mix. Cover lightly with coarse sand or grit and press in. Keep moist. After four weeks at room temperature, give the seeds a six-week -- or longer -- cold period, in the refrigerator or, ideally, outdoors under snow cover. Seeds should then germinate indoors at room temperature or outdoors in spring warmth. When seedlings become crowded, move them into a larger tray or into separate pots. Plant them into the garden in late summer. Plants will produce only leaves in their first two years.
