Description: Hardcover. First edition. Octavo. 277, [11]pp., with advertisements at the rear. In the original publisher's binding with a gilt pictorial design on the front board by John Feely. Ex-library copy with spine letters, bookplate, small number stamp, and pocket. Small chip to the crown, rear hinge is cracked, good overall condition. Signed in pencil on the front free endpaper by Jonathan P. Gillis, Captain of the USS Ossipee (noted on p. 165 in this book), a screw sloop of war in the Union Navy during the American Civil War. During the war he also commanded the USS Monticello (p. 141), and the USS Seminole (p. 243). He eventually reached the rank of Commodore. Gillis was a Delaware native who also served in the Mexican-American War, and on Perry's expedition to open Japan in 1853-54. A nice association copy with a fine pictorial binding signed by John Feely.
