Description

Scarce, antique, 16th - 17th century, Transoxiana. Safavid Indo-Persian Islamic wine carafe bottle (surāhī) made of cast, forged, turned, and decorated in openwork copper alloy.
With a spherical body rising from a short foot with a central bulbous ring, resting on a splayed foot, the tall, ribbed tubular neck is adorned at the top and bottom with openwork bands of a typical Safavid pattern four-petaled blossom.
The top band with remains of turquoise stone inlays may indicate that the bottle was jeweled with turquoise stones, possibly added at a later period.
The bottle is made of several elements: a cast and turned base, and the spherical body is made of two halves decorated on the shoulder with turned design and joined in the middle.
The neck consists of a ribbed tabular section mounted with two pierced bands, a mouth with serrated edges, and a disc-shaped lip.
Many Indo Persian miniatures, including the Timurid, Safavid, and Mughal, depict aristocrats and wine bearers holding long-necked bottles of similar shape.
These battles were made of copper alloy, glass, silver, and ceramic materials
