Vintage Virginia Dare Korker Bottle Cap, New Bedford, MA, Brooklyn, NY 1960s

These caps are becoming quite uncommon.

This American Icon company was founded in 1835 as a flavor and extract company and was incorporated in 1923 by chemist Bernard H. Smith out of MA who widened their focus towards the entire food and beverage industry including even oral care and pharmaceuticals. This change came mainly because their biggest seller was wine and prohibition put a damper on that.

A neat fact the name is an homage to the first English child born in America, the daughter of Eleanor and Ananias Dare.

This company is still going strong today out of Brooklyn, NY, and is approaching over 200 years as an American symbol too bad they are out of the soda manufacturing business as they had quite a following for their unique flavors Bernard came up with.

Their website describes it nicely.

“The name Virginia Dare came to symbolize wholesomeness and purity, and when Garrett & Company was founded in the region in 1835, the name was adopted as a brand for its wine produced from the native Scuppernong grape."
