Divinyls were an Australian rock band formed in '80 with Chrissy Amphlett (vocals) & Mark McEntee (guitar). Amphlett garnered attention for performing on stage in a school uniform & fishnet stockings, often using an illuminated neon tube as a prop for displaying aggression towards band members & the audience. In the '80s they released 4 albums Music from Monkey Grip EP ('82), Desperate ('83), What a Life! ('85) & Temperamental ('88) which had hit singles in Australia with Science Fiction, Good Die Young, & Pleasure and Pain. Amphlett was controversial for her brash, overtly sexual persona & subversive humour in lyrics, performances & interviews. Their image gradually changed after the release of album What A Life! ('85), when they began wearing elaborate clothing & producing pop songs. By the Temperamental ('88) album, their mage had changed to glamour fashion. In '91 they released diVINYLS & the single I Touch Myself, which hit #1 in Australia, #4 in the USA & #10 in the UK. The song caused such controversy, it had trouble getting airplay in many markets; to the point that while performing the song in Texas in '91, the plug was pulled mid-set by organizers. diVINYLS reached #5 on the Australian Album Chart & #15 on USA Billboard Top 200. Underworld (’96) was released in Australia, but not in the USA. By the end of '96, Amphlett & McEntee separated without formally disbanding. Aged 53 years, Amphlett died in 2013 after a battle with breast cancer.
