In the 1950's, Downtown Charlottesville was a hustling and bustling "Main Street
USA" right out of a Norman Rockwell painting! The Paramount Theatre, built in 1931, was
still a thriving movie house. Main Street was converted into a pedestrian mall in the mid-
1970's.
If you stand on the corner of E. Main St. and 2nd St. E., looking east, you will
recognize many of the buildings seen in this ink drawing. The most dramatic change from
this view is probably the fact that the buildings adjoining the Paramount Theatre were
razed to create the Central Place on the Downtown Mall. Many of the other buildings are
still standing today and appear much the same as they did in the 50's. Storefronts change
with the times, but most upper stories remain basically the same as when they were first
built. This scene was drawn from a photograph taken by Gitchell's Studio and included in
the book, Charlottesville and the University of Virginia - A Pictorial History, by Fred
I. Heblich and Mary Ann Elwood (The Donning Company /Publishers).
Artist Jeff Suling has lived in the Charlottesville area since 1965. Although educated
in music, art has been a great hobby most of his life-especially drawing old houses,
buildings, and towns. Several of his ink drawings have been published in the Fluvanna
County Historical Society Bulletins.
He is currently the Fine Arts Coordinator of
Charlottesville Public Schools.
