Patti LaBelle (b. May 24, 1944) is an American singer who began her career in the '60s as lead singer of the group Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles. Following the group's name change to Labelle in the early '70s, they released the iconic disco song Lady Marmalade, & the group later became the 1st African-American vocal group to land the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. After splitting in '76, LaBelle began her solo career with her critically acclaimed debut album, which included the career-defining song You Are My Friend. She became a mainstream star in '84 following the successful singles If Only You Knew, New Attitude, & Stir It Up. In '86 she released the #1 album Winner in You, & the #1 duet single On My Own with Michael McDonald. LaBelle won a '92 Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for her '91 album Burnin', followed by a 2nd Grammy win for the album Live! One Night Only. Her albums Burnin' ('91), Gems ('94) & Flame ('97) continued her popularity with young R&B audiences. In '92 she starred in her own TV sitcom Out All Night. Following the release of 2 albums in the early millennium, she reunited with her Labelle band mates for the album Back to Now, & a promotional tour. In a career that has spanned over 50 years, she has sold over 50 million records & has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Hollywood Walk of Fame & the Apollo Theater Hall of Fame. She was included in Rolling Stone Magazine's list of 100 Greatest Singers. LaBelle is commonly identified as the "Godmother of Soul".
