VERNONIA LETTERMANNII, NARROW-LEAF IRONWEED

This rare species is known only from Arkansas and Oklahoma in USA. It was named for famous botanist George W. Lettermann. It is strange looking hardy perennial with thread-shaped dark green leaves up to 9 cm long but only 0,3 cm in wide. The plant without flowers has restio or grass appearance. Numerous, bright purple-violet flowers are arranged in dense clusters and are produced from late summer into autumn. This is a very hardy, drought tolerant, new-to-cultivation perennial great for borders and extremely beautiful in containers. It makes unusual cut flower. Flowers first year from sowing. Rarely grows more than 100 cm tall. Very showy.

-Sow: any time indoors; just cover the seeds; germination 14-30 days at 15- 20 C; if germination does not occur after 4 weeks- change the temperature to 5- 10 C for 2-3 weeks;

-Aftercare: full sun and well drained, dry to average soil; hardy to -35 C;
