JAPANESE ANTIQUE TOBACCO TRAY

A very beautiful tobacco tray with the grain of the wood. It is modeled after a brazier, and can be used as a small brazier as it has a copper plate inside.

After the introduction of tobacco, tobacco trays appeared in Japan to provide the necessary tools for smoking. The tobacco tray, which combined the necessary tools for smoking such as a fireplace, ash tray, tobacco container, and kiseru, was improved to make it more convenient for smoking chopped tobacco, and it became more functional. In addition to being used for smoking, tobacco trays were also used to store small articles, entertain guests, serve as a medium for advertising in stores, and sometimes served as a daily necessity to keep a charcoal fire going.

After the Meiji period (1868-1912), as smoking gradually shifted from kiseru to paper cigarettes, the appearance of tobacco trays also changed, and today, tobacco trays are rarely seen outside of theatrical performances and tea ceremonies.
