Buck Owens (Aug 12, 1929-Mar 25, 2006) was an American musician, singer/songwriter & band leader. Front-man for Buck Owens & the Buckaroos, they had 21 #1 hits on the Billboard Country Music Charts. He pioneered what came to be called the Bakersfield sound, named in honor of his California home city from which he drew inspiration for what he preferred to call "American music". While the Buckaroos originally featured a fiddle & retained pedal steel guitar into the ‘70s, their sound on records & onstage was always more stripped-down & elemental. Their signature style was based on simple story lines, infectious choruses, a twangy electric guitar, an insistent rhythm supplied by a prominent drum track & high, 2-part vocal harmonies featuring Owens & his guitarist Don Rich. From ‘69-‘86, he co-hosted the popular TV variety show Hee Haw with Roy Clark. The accidental ‘74 death of Don Rich, devastated him for years & impacted his creative efforts until he performed with Dwight Yoakam in ‘88 on the duet Streets of Bakersfield. It was Owen’s 1st #1 single in 16 years. In '96 Owens was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame & the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. He was ranked #12 on CMT's 40 Greatest Men of Country Music in 2003 & the Buckaroos #2 on the network's 20 Greatest Bands in 2005. His discography consists of 39 studio albums, 16 compilation albums, 9 live albums & 97 singles. Buck Owens died in his sleep of a heart attack in 2006.
