This is a rectangular box made around c1900. It is veneered in mahogany and decorated with a blond and dark wood banding, probably satinwood and ebony, around the lid and front of the box. Inside the box it has a blue silk padded lining. On the inside of the lid the coat of arms for the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers. This item may have originally contained and item used in ceremony or contained a valued gift that was presented to a dignitary.

Condition

The box is in good condition for its age. There are no cracks in the wood or in the veneers and the banding is all intact.

The hinges are solid and the box closes correctly.

Although the box has a lock the key has been lost.

The box itself has numerous small dints and scuffs on its surface and there are a number of tiny sections of veneer missing around the outside edge of the lid as can be seen in photographs 1-4. The most significant section of damage to the veneer is visible on the front of the lid on its right side measuring 1mm x 10mm. This can be seen in photographs 1-3. These photographs also show that edging around the keyhole is missing a small section of blond wood veneer.

The silk lining inside has also worn in places and has frayed at its edge near the lock as can be see in photographs 9 and 11.

The base covering is also worn through usage and this can be seen in photograph 8.
