👀V RARE HUGE PRE 1850 ANTIQUE ENGLISH JAQUES ST GEORGE STYLE King 4 3/4” CHESS SET.

(Please note the sale does not include the board which is now sold.)

This listing is for an extraordinarily rare Georgian BOXWOOD AND EBONISED BOXWOOD….ST GEORGE JAQUES complete chess set. EXCEPTIONAL!!

It is beautifully tactile made from boxwood and ebonised boxwood, in the British ST GEORGE pattern - as far I as know….this pattern was in production up until 1850 when the Staunton pattern replaced it.

Both Kings and queens have the reeded crowns with ball. This is very unusual and does not fit with any other patterns listed. Later models may have taken out some of the time consuming details of the sets to make them easier in the making…..or it may the reeded queens were kings from a small set….!! (Please note: I am not an expert…please do your own research!!)

The hand carved chessmen are outstanding in height. The King measuring at 4 3/4” is the tallest I have seen. The tallest mentioned in other historic sets is 3 3/4”. So these are a spectacular find for the collector or museum.

CONDITION: Excellent antique condition commensurate with age. White king has a split and one white bishop has a bite out of one of the disc knops…but on the whole they are in very good condition. Please ask for more photos if you require.

RESEARCH NOTES:

Saint George (or St. George) pattern chessmen were a variation of the

ubiquitous English Pattern chess sets, modified by replacing of the cross

finial with a simpler ball or plume and lack of reeding on the King's

headpiece. The St. George Chess Sets were designed for the Saint George Chess Club and first appeared around 1840. This is a very practical chess set design and was in common use through the early 20th Century. Aside from Jaques (see Jaques 1860 Pattern Book Image), chessmen of this type were produced by John Calvert, William and Thomas Lund, F. A. Ayres, British Company, George Merrifield, and Hezekiah Dixon, among others.
