The World wide International Order of Good Templars had a very humble beginning at Syracuse, New York. Some young men formed the first Lodge in July 1852. In 1869 Thomas Roberts, a Scot from Montrose, was sent as a missionary to introduce it to Scotland. On 13th August between sixty and seventy from the audience at a public meeting signed an application and a few days later Scotland's first Lodge was instituted with forty-two members. Chapter headings include: The Chiefs of the Order; Grand Lodge Agents; Juvenile Work; Outstanding district Workers; The International Aspect; Educational Work and The Scottish Licensing System.
