Antique Pearlware Blue & White Transfer Plate early Spode impressed mark.

A decorative early English transferware plate, in a lovely cobalt blue.  Excellent to display and add to your collection.  Looking at the transfer pattern, we know this is an early design as you can see only two men are on the bridge.  This design was one of the forerunners to the now famous Willow Pattern.

I would describe the body of the plate as  hybrid porcelain—combining the ingredients of hard-paste porcelain (china clay and china stone) and bone ash, which became the standard English bone china.

As you can see the plate has an impressed maker's mark to the reverse, which attributes it to the Spode factory and dates it's manufacture  from 1790 to 1820. I have included an image from Godden's Encyclopaedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks revised edition 1991, page 589 relating to Spode.

I hope you can see that overall the plate is in very good antique condition.  To be really picky, there is a tiny nick to the top rim and some light surface marks, commensurate with age and use and mentioned for accuracy.
