Creative Tradition:
The Ceramics of Rosanjin and Masterpieces of the Past Which Influenced Him
Exhibition Catalogue
1996
Setagaya Art Museum, Tokyo

The relationship of creation and tradition has always been an important issue, in ancient times as well as today
and in all cultural expressions, not just the visual arts. -------
Kitaoji Rosanjin had a deep intrest in the creative work of his predecessors not only in ceramics but in calligraphy,
painting, lacquerware, and the art of life, and it is well known that they exerted an important influence on his own creative activities.
There is a consensus among experts that he made many out and out copies of ancient masterpieces of ceramics which impressed him.
In Japan there is an established practice in the world of ink painting and calligraphy of copying the work of ancient masters in order to
achieve a higher spiritual level in one's own work.
This is a respected form of spiritual discipline which may not be compatible with the individualist approach of the modern West.
Rosanjin definitely made use of this practice. ------
