A Tiara is a jeweled, ornamental crown traditionally worn by women.  It is worn during formal occasions, particularly if the dress code is white tie.

 

A Tiara is a type of Crown, but a Crown is not a type of Tiara.  Women typically wear tiaras whereas both men and women can wear crowns. 

 

Queens, Empresses, and Princesses regularly wear Tiaras at formal evening occasions.  Tiaras are worn by women around their head or on the forehead as a circlet on very formal or high social occasions.  Tiaras are frequently used to "Crown" the winners of beauty pageants.

 

If you want to follow the age-old tradition, then Tiaras are only supposed to be worn by Brides on their wedding day or by married women. This is because of the Tiara is rooted in classical antiquity - it was seen as the emblem of the loss of innocence to the crowning of love.

 

Tiaras are worn by women to symbolize something special.  In our modern age, Tiaras are not just limited for Royals to wear but are for all women to wear.
