ELSHOLTZIA STAUNTONII, CHINESE MINT SHRUB

An unusual, very decorative plant for autumn garden. This is a shrubby perennial native to the rocky mountains and dry hillsides of central and north-eastern China. In coldest climates it dies to the ground most winters and should be cut to the base and grown as an herbaceous perennial. In a bit warmer climates it can reach to 200 cm and forms a magnificent shrub. Toothed, ovate-elliptic leaves 10- 14 cm long emit a nice, minty fragrance when crushed.Narrow upright panicles of densely packed rose-purple flowers are to 20 cm long and appear in autumn. Genus name honors Johann Elsholtz (1623- 1688) famous Prussian horticulturist and physician. Elsholtzia stauntonii is very valuable, late flowering plant for borders and large containers. Suitable for cutting. Medicine plant.
