IRIS TECTORUM, ROOF IRIS

This Iris is quite distinct from its more familiar relatives. Very large (15 cm across), lilac-blue iris-shaped, flat flowers with remarkable drawings on the petals appear in early summer above nice foliage in fresh light green colour. Leaves arranged in fans are semi evergreen. Clumpy growth without stolons. Native to China and Korea it has been grown for a few hundreds years also in Japan. Commonly called "Roof Iris" because it has been grown in the past on thatched roofs in Japan (due the scarcity of land). Beautiful and rare plant. Very easy from seeds.
