  • ABOUT the artist: Wilhelm Schlote was born on March 4th, 1946 in Lüdenscheid. His first art teacher, "Heinz Mack" (Group Zero) awakened the art in him. While he was still at school, he was taught by Albert Schulze-Vellinghausen (art critic of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and important art collector) at the Folkwang School in Essen. This is followed by studies, philosophy in Bonn and then art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kassel, among others. with Karl Oskar Blase, Harry Kramer, and Arnold Bode (founder of the Documenta Kassel). Wilhelm Schlote then chose to teach in Kassel and then in Hamburg. He published the first of his 45 books early on, published by Signal-Verlag and then by Insel u. Suhrkamp. In 1976 Wilhelm Schlote received the "German Youth Book Prize" for his book - Today I wish for a hippopotamus. At the same time, the first Cartoon postcards were produced, sold worldwide and known as "Schlote Karten" - Astrid Lindgren quote: "The most beautiful thing I've ever seen at the Frankfurt Book Fair - the Schlotekarten!" Wilhelm Schlote also works as a freelancer for the FAZ - Die Zeit - Merkur - Welt am Sonntag - Schöner Wohnen. In 1978, Wilhelm Schlote rejected applications from two universities for a professorship in graphic design and illustration, gave up his teaching job and went to Paris as a freelance artist. During this time, the "Wilhelmsgalerie" in Kassel was created in Wilhelmshöhe. This published his first city posters, which are now known and loved far beyond the German border. This is followed by a major award in France - the Calvet Academy - gives Wilhelm Schlote a prize for his drawings - presented by Cathrine Deneuve and Claude Chabrol.
