Duranta  is an evergreen shrub or small tree with lovely purple flowers in summer. It is cultivated in tropical climates but is a rare  shrub in the UK. Grows to about 1 meter in height by 1 meter in spread. The mature plants have sharp thorns. In autumn, yellow-orange fruits may appear.

This shrub is best grown in a greenhouse in the UK, but it can be grown outside in a pot in  warmer months and then brought indoors in the autumn and winter.

Grows best in full sun and likes to be watered often if kept in pots.

To germinate soak the  seeds in warm water for 10 minutes. Plant seeds in a pot of quality potting compost at a depth of 2 inches. Water well and place in sunny spot - 65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep pot moist but not water logged. Germination in 1 - 3 months.
