About Thermostatic Expansion Valves & Orifice Tubes

Thermostatic expansion (TX) valves and orifice tubes are the flow control devices of the air conditioning system. Their basic function is to provide a metered amount of refrigerant into the evaporator coil dependant on the HEAT LOADING on the coil. HEAT LOADING is defined as the amount of heat (temperature and humidity in the air) to which the evaporator is subjected.

Types:

Three basic types of TX valves are used.

*Conventional internally equalised.

*Conventional externally equalised.

*Block type.

All TX valves sense the outlet temperature of the evaporator coil and vary their opening dependant on that temperature. (ie level of super-heat across the coil).

TX valve/orifice tubes require the following conditions to be met

*Unrestricted flow through the valve.

*Correct sizing of the valve (tonnage).

*Correct superheat rating on valve.

*Consistent flow of liquid refrigerant.

*Clean accurate sampling of superheat via the superheat capillary sensing bulb and tube.
