Description: It never rains, they say, it only pours - an adage that Brisbane singer-songwriter Jarryd James knows all too well. After years of musical false-starts and frustrations, the 31-year-old has been caught up in a storm of success over the last 18 months, including a Number Two debut album, 'Thirty One,' and 2015's highestselling Australian single, "Do You Remember." But there's no sign of things slowing down. "I have just finished writing and recording five new songs in L.A.," Jarryd reveals. "It's been pretty crazy - like I landed home in Brisbane from a gig in New York, then four days later, I was back on a plane to L.A. for these sessions. But that's the way it goes man - you know, you've just gotta jump on that and go with it." Those five new songs form the core of simultaneous Australian and U.S. releases - an EP here called 'High,' and a debut album also called 'High,' in the States, which will merge the new material with the best tracks from 'Thirty One.' As he has done in the past, Jarryd collaborated cleverly for his latest recordings, working with some of the hottest alternative producers in North America, including the likes of Mikky Ekko (Rihanna, David Guetta) and Tobias Jesso Jnr (Adele, Sia). "It's so weird man, it's like a blind date," he laughs of the hook-ups. "It can be a really strange thing to navigate and it can be really awkward, but the pay off is that when it's the right people and it works, then it works really well." Some credit for how often "it works" for James must also go to the singer himself, as he possesses a beautifully organic approach to songwriting, perfect for this type of collaboration. "I tend to only focus on the melodies," he explains, "and whatever happens instrumentally is just what feels right. I also don't come in with words already written, I like to form lyrics, let them be informed by the vibe of the music." As James describes it, the "vibe" across the new material isn't "dramatically different, but it is a little step away in some respects." Not afraid to push himself, the Brisbane singer has embraced new influences as they have emerged, but remained true to his own sound. Two songs, for instance - "Burning Out" and "Can't Help It" - were cut with Andrew "Pop" Wansel, who has produced Billboard Number Ones for Alessia Cara ("Here") and Tory Lanez ("Say It"). "He's from Philadelphia, and he's super chilled and these songs, they're a little bit more R&B than the other stuff. Where Pop's from, it's very much that urban sort of stuff, so he brought that. We got this awesome jazz pianist in from Philly, and he played some totally cool stuff. That's mostly what I listen to, so it makes sense. I really wanna head in that direction." More subtly, Mikky Ekko also drew something fresh from James on "Claim My Love," leading the singer to abandon his preferred falsetto vocal style in favour of a full voice. "Mikky being the kind of guy that he is, he just inspired me," Jarryd says. "We wrote this really cool, organic track. It's pretty emotional, and I sing a bit differently - that's a real point of difference on the album." Even the more familiar among the new tracks offer fresh angles on the Jarryd James sound. The Tobias Jesso Jnr collaboration, "How Do We Make It," adds an edgy spin, resulting in a tune James dubs "one of my favourite ever," while latest single, "1000x" - produced by Joel Little, who was a key figure on 'Thirty One' - features a duet with Broods vocalist Georgia Nott. "It's an older song which I was never 100 per cent sure of," says James, "but Georgia, who is Joel's friend, really loved it - she actually walked down the aisle to the demo of it in January! So we thought, 'Why don't we get her to sing on it too,' make it a duet kind of thing. So she went and recorded some vocals, and when I heard it, I was like 'Shit, this is so awesome!'." With "1000x" set to hit American airwaves just as James hits the road supporting Broods on their U.S. tour, it is pretty clear that life for the easy-going singer won't be slowing down any time soon, but, well, "You've just gotta jump on that..."
