In honor of Sir Elton John’s final three U.S. concerts this week at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, Walmart Inc. is launching a limited-edition commemorative sunglass frame in the Elton John Eyewear collection, which will be exclusively available on Walmart.com. The retailer said fans will remember the iconic sunglasses Sir Elton wore in 1975 at his two career-defining Dodger Stadium sold-out concerts.

Walmart said it’s “proud to release the “L.A. ‘22” sunglasses, an updated version of the original to celebrate the end of Sir Elton’s U.S. touring career at the stadium. The sunglasses will be presented in a commemorative case with a keepsake cleaning cloth and limited edition packaging, featuring Sir Elton performing in the original frames. The performer’s name is etched in the lenses “making this a true keepsake,” said David Reitnauer, Vice President Health & Wellness of Optical and Hearing.

“Similar to the legendary concert, once these frames sell out, they will not restock,” said Reitnauer, adding that Walmart has pledged to donate a minimum of $1 million annually from the Elton John Eyewear collection to support the Elton John AIDS Foundation. “This partnership is a natural extension of Walmart’s mission to help customers live better, healthier lives by providing quality, affordable and accessible healthcare in the communities they serve – including access to HIV health resources.”

“Elton is wrapping up his career and is no longer touring,” Thumbutu added. “He’s ending his total music career. We thought what better way than to wrap up his touring date with limited edition frames and truly make them a collector’s item.”

Thumbutu was inspired by the round round plastic frames Sir Elton wore during his two engagements in 1975. When Walmart started working with Sir Elton John, “We made sure to have the right style, and that the style didn’t have to be expensive,” she said. “It could be affordable.

“It’s how we’re building out our assortments overall at the company,” Thumbutu said, adding, “This frame was inspired by a round plastic frame and that frame, while it looks pristine, is not particularly on-trend now.

“We could have just made a copy, and said, ‘here’s a replica,’” Thumbutu said. “We wanted to bring Elton from 1975 into 2022. We’re on trend – metals are on trend, details are on trend, and rounds are still on trend.

The round frames have star detailing across the top of the frame and on the front of the fame. “Those little embellishments are truly Elton,” Thumbutu said. “White, blue and gold, is a nod to the Dodger uniform Elton wore for his two 1975 performances.

“Adding the gold tone across the top makes the frame softer as well as adding a rose gold lens instead of the typical brown sunglass lens,” she said. “We were able to add etching into every single lens.

“This frame was really fun to design,” Thumbutu said, adding that customers will feel the weight and quality of the $99 sunglasses. “They’re also getting a signature cleaning cloth with the iconic picture of Elton taken during that concert in ‘75, and a velvet-lined suede case with a card about Sir Elton John’s AIDS Foundation. Part of the reason we partnered with him is, how do you eradicate AIDS. Customers know that with each frame they’re buying, a portion goes to the Foundation.

The collection in 2021 was launched in collaboration with Walmart and Sam’s Club. The Elton John Eyewear collection brings the performer’s signature glasses to the masses and is designed to have something for everyone, so no matter who you are, you can always “Look Yourself.” The “Rocket Man” performer features more than 60 frames inspired by Sir Elton’s own style and available in stores at Walmart Vision Centers, Sam’s Club and online at Walmart.com.

“I hope people actually wear the sunglasses,” Thumbutu said. “In designing this frame, I really designed it so it will look good on the masses, in the hope that people would actually wear them and get joy. It’s definitely a unique piece.”
