U2 are an Irish rock band formed in '76 with Bono (lead vocals & rhythm guitar), the Edge (lead guitar, keyboards & backing vocals), Adam Clayton (bass guitar) & Larry Mullen Jr. (drums & percussion). Initially rooted in post-punk, U2's style evolved, yet maintained an anthemic quality built on Bono's expressive vocals & the Edge's effects-based guitar textures. Popular for their live performances, they have staged ambitious & elaborate tours. Boy ('80) was their debut album. Their 1st UK #1 album War ('83) & singles Sunday Bloody Sunday, & Pride (In the Name of Love) helped establish U2's reputation as a politically & socially conscious band. By the mid ‘80s they were globally renowned for their live act, highlighted by their performance at Live Aid in '85. Album The Joshua Tree ('87) was their greatest critical & commercial success. Topping the charts around the world, it produced their only #1 singles in the USA to date: With or Without You, & I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For. U2 reinvented themselves with their acclaimed album Achtung Baby ('91) & their Zoo TV Tour by integrating alternative rock, electronic dance & industrial music into their sound. This continued through album Pop ('97). The All That You Can't Leave Behind (2000) & How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb (2004) albums established a more conventional, mainstream sound. Their 360° Tour of 2009-2011 set records for the highest-attended & highest-grossing concert tour in history. U2 have 22 Grammy Awards (more than any other band) & in 2005 were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Rolling Stone Magazine ranked U2 at #22 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. U2 have continued to perform, release music & are 1 of the world's best-selling music artists, having sold over 170 million records!
