Vanilla Ice (b. Robert Van Winkle 1967) is an American rapper, actor & TV host. He released debut album Hooked in '89. When he then signed with SBK Records in '90, SBK remixed & re-recorded Hooked under the title To the Extreme with new artwork & music. To the Extreme became the fastest selling hip hop album of all time & spent 16 weeks at #1 on the USA Billboard 200. Radio stations reported over 200 phone calls requesting the song Ice Ice Baby which was the 1st hip hop single to top the Billboard charts. Soon after, MC Hammer had Ice as an opening act on his tour. In '90 he began an 8-month relationship with Madonna & appeared in photographs for her book SEX. Although successful, he later regretted his contract with SBK, which paid him to adopt a more commercial appearance to appeal to a mass audience & published fabricated bio information without his knowledge. After a suicide attempt, he changed his music & life style. While his less mainstream albums weren’t as successful, he has had an underground following. In 2009 he hosted The Vanilla Ice Project TV show. Along with Beastie Boys, 3rd Bass & House Of Pain, Ice was 1 of the earliest white rappers to attain major success. Chuck D has credited him as a regional breakthrough, stating "He broke through in the mid-South in something that was kind of indigenous to the hip-hop culture down there. He just doesn’t get credit for it."
