Foreword :

This book portrays the colonels, brigadiers and generals of Zahal. Not all have been included

that, of course, would have been impossible. In some

cases the choice was obvious, in others it was more

difficult to make. We, therefore, decided to present

a suitable cross-section of all those who have had

a hand in the shaping of Zahal

whether by

organizing it, by contributing to the consolidation

of its doctrine, by elaborating its theory of warfare

or by some significant activity in certain crucial

periods. Among these last will be found also all

those who worked behind the scenes during the

Six Day War and before it.

This is a book where the stories of the Com-

manders are told in a peculiar way, some at great

length, supported by quotations selected from the

words of the Commanders themselves

and some

very briefly: just a sketch, an outline, a perspective

through biographical notes. However, the length of

the stories, in our view, is not an indication of their

greater or lesser importance.

During the Six Day War, as in previous wars,

the Commanders

- both of the senior and junior

ranks

- advanced always at the head of their men,

always giving the order: "Follow me!" Therein lies

their uniqueness.

The Commanders fought admirably

- but the

war could not have been won without their soldiers.

The front-line soldiers, the regular army soldiers

and the reservists are the ones who made victory

possible. The stories of their Commanders shed a

great light also upon their character.
