RHODOCHITON ATROSANGUINEUS, PURPLE BELL VINE

This unusual, rare perennial vine is native to Mexico and has been cultivated as an ornamental plant since at least 1836. Its amazing, dangling flowers have a pink, bell-shaped calyx of sepals surrounding a protruding tubular corolla of purple-black petals to 5 cm long. After pollination the tubes will fall away but the sepals will expand and turn greenish-pink to rose-red and look elegantfor weeks. It has somewhat hairy, heart-shaped leaves to 8 cm long, usually with purple venation and purple edges. Perennial in warmer areas, annual in colder. This quick growing, vigorous climber is perfect for a wall, trellis or pergola. Excellent for hanging baskets where it will cascade with charm.

It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's (RHS) Award of Garden Merit.
