Rare Arts and Crafts Copper Kettle Square Triangular Christopher Dresser Style c 1910. Bakelite handle.

This listing is for an extremely stylish antique Arts and Crafts copper kettle dating to circa 1910. This highly decorative and collectable very angular geometric design is in a style similar to those of Dr. Christopher Dresser. The cleverly crafted shape is square in plan, but the smaller square lid has been rotated 90 degrees to the base, so that the tapering sides form triangular shapes. The long thin diamond shaped spout is inset to the body at an acute angle enhancing the striking design. The riveted handle brackets are simple "L" shapes but the locating lugs are formed at an angle so that they emphasise the wacky shape. The handle is a metal rod riveted to the brackets but covered with a bakelite thermal insulating cover.

The main body has been made of copper sheet that has been formed and soldered together, as has the spout. The square shaped base is corrugated with circles and has been inserted into the body and soldered into place. There is an internal shoulder to the body to locate the very close fitting flat topped, twin vented, lid that terminates with an angular bakelite knob. Both the inside of the body and the lid have been tinned. It is in excellent usable condition. There are no maker's marks. Some collectors may refer to this shape as Cubist.

This is a great item of antique Edwardian 20th century decorative Arts and Crafts copper or metal ware to add to any collection or even for use in a period or contemporary setting.

MEASUREMENTS: The kettle stands 7 3/4 inches high to the top of the handle and has the body diameter of 8 3/4 inches across the corners and 6 1/2 inches square. It weighs 763 grammes unpacked. Maximum capacity of about 3 pints.

CONDITION: It is in excellent usable antique condition with a few very minor knocks or dents, commensurate with age and use. There is a small loss to the bakelite handle where it is joined to the handle struts.

RESEARCH NOTES:
