Mettlach V&B Wall Plate/Plaque Russian Fairy Tales Red Knight by B.Zworykin c.1980s

Description: I will be posting this week a collection of 10 wall plates/plaques produced by Villeroy and Boch and dedicated to Russian Fairy tales.

Presented is a beautiful wall plate made by Heinrich - a subsidiary of Villeroy and Boch (Mettlach). This plate is a part of the series of Russian Fairy Tales and matches the Mettlach Fairy Tale beer steins by V&B. Made of Bone China - the highest quality porcelain by VB.

The illustrations and design for the series were made by Boris Zworykin (1872-1942) - a famous Russian artist in exile who created his illustrations to four Russian fairy tales in the 1930s. He belonged to the group of wonderful artists called "Mir Iskusstva" - "The World of Art" and worked together with Victor Vasnetsov, Vrubel, and Bilibin who represented Russian symbolism movement. His beautiful designs and illustration often employed Russian folklore and fairy tales.

The title for this plate is "The Red Knight" and depicts an illustration to the famous Russian fairy tale "Vasilisa the Beautiful" collected by Alexander Afanasyev (1826-1871), a Russian Slavist and ethnographer who published nearly 600 Russian fairy and folk tales, one of the largest collections of folklore in the world..

The plate is very beautiful, the artwork is fantastic - my pictures do not do it a lot of justice. It is in excellent mint condition. It is 8.5" in diameter.
