Gemstone - Indicolite Tourmaline 


Color - Indicolite tourmalines (tourmalines with blue in them) are rare. Indicolites that are pure blue (that have no green in them) are extremely rare and indicolites that also are a Paraiba (contains copper and manganese) from Mozambique are the rarest. This is one has a gorgeous navy blue color with some mixed saturated stones to vibrant purple.

Origin

Some of the finest Indicolite in the world is found in Minas Gerais, Brazil; in particular at the Pederneira and Cruzeiro mines near the village of Sâo José Da Safira. In addition to Brazil, Indicolite has also been found in Russia, Mexico and Pakistan, and Afghanistan.

Blue -Indicolite (Blue) Tourmalines have a color range from a light greenish-blue to a strong blue with a secondary green and are available in light to dark tones

 With a hardness of 7 to 7.5 and no cleavage, tourmalines of all types have good durability. However, watch out for stones with flaws/low clarity because these may be weaker.


These gems flaunt trade names such as 'indicolite', the name given to a range of blue tourmalines, and 'verdelite', the name given to a range of green tourmalines. Both named varieties are often tinged with blue, green or violet offering a broad spectrum of colours in varying saturations.
