Beautiful Victorian Oak? Writing box/stationery cabinet dating to approximately circa 1880.

The cabinet has a domed lid and fall front. The fall front panel has a sprung mechanism which pushes the pen tray and ink wells forward when opened. The fold out slope has a black leather writing surface in fair condition which opens to reveal a document compartment below.

The main body of the cabinet has various compartments for stationary with a removable leather clock type perpetual calendar beside which is a small bank of three drawers. Above the drawers is a slot containing a leather framed porcelain aide memoir.

The inside of the lid has a black leather panel with integrated slots. I Believe the pen knife, scissors and page turner to be original but doubt that the quill and other pen is contemporary with the cabinet.

The bottom section has a flip lid pen compartment flanked by another small lidded compartment and two panel cut crystal ink wells with silver plated lids both glass components in excellent condition, however silver plate is very slightly worn to the edges.

The box has very good quality solid brass hardware - the piano type hinge, carry handles and slope hinges all being firmly affixed. A Bramah lock complete with two keys is fitted but this lock is very temperamental and would probably need to be looked at by a locksmith (the box was locked and most often worked fine - now it doesn’t) I suspect that this has been an ongoing issue judging by the previous owners written instructions (included) and signs of the lock being forced and then repaired.
