About Maker :

Vernon Kilns Company

Vernon Kilns was an American ceramic company in Vernon, California. In July 1931, Faye G. Bennison purchased the former Poxon China pottery renaming the company Vernon Kilns.

Vernon Kilns was one of the "Big Five" California potteries.

Vernon produced ceramic tableware, art ware, giftware, and figurines as well as transfer-print specialty ware that could be specially ordered. Custom decal plates, as special order items, were produced for department stores, for promotional advertisement, for commemorative events, and for the tourist trade.

The company closed its doors in 1958.

About Retailer  :

Kerrison’s Department Store began as the C. and E. L. Kerrison Dry Goods Company in 1830. A notice in a Charleston newspaper on September 23, 1830, stated: “The subscribers have this day entered into co-partnership in the dry goods business under the firm of C. and E. L. Kerrison.” In 1838, the firm built a large three-story brick building at the northwest corner of King and Market streets (which was later known as the Academy of Music). In 1858, the store relocated to 80-82 Hasell Street, and the Charleston City Directory for 1932 lists its address as 260-262 King Street. The 1960, Charleston City Directory lists the store as Kerrisons Department Store at 260 King Street. In the 1890s, Philip Kerrison sold the business, and one of the purchasing partners was Edwin Huger Poulnot (1871-1955), who eventually acquired a controlling interest in the company. Popularly known simply as Kerrison’s, the company closed its doors in the 1990s.
