GOETHITE
Goethite was first described by J.G. Lenz in 1806 who named it after a popular German poet and philosopher at that time Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It is related to Hematite and Marcasite. Its been used for thousands of years as a pigment to color paint. The famous Caves of Lascaux in France more than 16,000 years old contains numerous cave paintings of animals and human figures partly using Goethite paint. Nowadays Goethite is processed for its Iron, while specimens are sold on the mineral market or cut into rare and valuable jewelry pieces. Goethite is not only found on earth - when Nasa's Spirit Rover was surveying the surface of Mars it found deposits of Goethite.
